Mayor Kym McHugh, of Alexandrina Council in South Australia, and Deputy Chair of the National Sea Change Taskforce, has decided not to stand for re-election at the forthcoming local government elections in South Australia, to be held in the first week of November.

Kym has been a councillor at Alexandrina for 25 years and has served as mayor for the past 19 years. He was a founding member of the National Sea Change Taskforce Committee when the organisation was established in 2004 and was elected Deputy Chair of the Taskforce in 2009. Kym also served as President of the Local Government Association of South Australia from 2011 to 2013.

Taskforce Chair Mayor Barry Sammels said Kym had played an outstanding leadership role in his own community on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula for many years and his contribution to the work of the Taskforce had been exceptional. “Kym will be sorely missed both by the people of Alexandrina and all of us who have worked with him in local government,” he said. “We wish Kym and his family all the best for the future.”

Kym said not standing for re-election meant he would be able to spend more time with his family and working around the farm with his two sons. “We are passionate about agriculture and working towards a sustainable food future,” he said. “Heather, my wife, has also got a few jobs lined up for me when I have a bit more time available.”
