A report published by the University College, London, has called for a professional body to help scientists communicate more effectively with non-scientists.

The report says this is necessary because scientists find themselves ill prepared to engage with emotionally charged public discourse on the evaluation and use of their science.

Professor Chris Rapley, Chair of the University College Policy Commission on the Communication of Climate Science, which produced the report, said the Commission set out to explore issues concerning the climate science community that were previously given insufficient attention.

“We recommend adapting the way in which we communicate with the general public and policy makers by enhancing the training and development of climate scientists and establishing a professional body to lead the climate change community,” he said.
