An Australian company has developed a concrete retaining block system which is designed to combat beach erosion and riverbank collapse.

Patrick Johnson, a director of Australian Coastal Walls, which adapted the product for Australian use, said it is based on a product that has been used overseas for more than 30 years.

“It’s environmentally friendly and aesthetically attractive,” he said. The block walls are flexible in design and can incorporate stairs, boat ramps, cycle tracks and walking tracks. Each block weighs 70 kilograms and can be produced in a range of colours.

Mr Johnson said plants can be added to blend in with the local surroundings. He said the product was cheaper than traditional rock walls. The system costs approximately $1 million per kilometre, depending on specifications. More information is available at – https://www.australiancoastalwalls.com.au
