A new manual to assist councils with climate risk assessment and planning has been launched by the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG). The Climate Adaptation Manual for Local Government: Embedding Resilience to Climate Change was launched by Mayor Angelo Tsirekas of the City of Canada Bay in metropolitan Sydney. The manual identifies leading adaptation case studies from Australia and overseas and contains a step-by-step framework for effectively embedding climate risk into council operations. ACELG Director Associate Professor Roberta Ryan said the manual is focused on translating existing research about climate change into practical guidance for councils. The 5th assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that efforts by the Australian public sector in building capacity to respond to climate change have been strong, but there are differences in methods and a ‘weakness’ in translating goals into specific policies.
